B Team Progress in the Cup. A Team Chalk Up Another Win 17th January: Collingbourne A reduced Bedwyn B to 80 runs from there 10 overs. The A-team then knocked the total off with an over to go. This week is the 1st round of the cup for the A-team against either Burbage A or Aldbourne. In the preliminary round for the indoor cup, Collingbourne B batted first against Marden. Openers Karl Gingell (37*) and Charlie Knight (25*) set the game up well with aggressive batting allowing the rest of the team to help score a large total. John Aitken (25*), Kris Walbridge (12) and Jon Candler (15*) helped Collingbourne to 149-2, setting Marden 150 to win. Collingbourne's bowling quartet bowled well at the start for no early reward. However, two run outs by John Aitken changed Collingbourne's fortunes with Ole Scott and Jon Candler each taking a wicket, as well as two further run outs, reducing Marden to 108 all out. Collingbourne B will next face Burbage B in the next round of the cup. James Paterson Injured in Latest League Game 24th January: Collingbourne A lost the toss and batted first against Burbage A. Openers Owen Sheppard and Graham Chandler made a good start putting on 54 for the 1st wicket in 5 overs. Chandler made another 25 but due to the loss pretty much 3 successive it was left to Bertie Rogers and Archie Scott to pick up the pieces, and they didn't disappoint. Some good running between the wickets meant that Graham didn't get back in to bat and the pair saw Collingbourne through to a score of 107 for 3 with Archie recording his highest indoor score of 18 not out. With the ball Collingbourne started well with John Foster finding a tight line and Graham Chandler taking a clever run out in the first over. Despite gaining another run out 2 bad overs put Collingbourne under pressure and Burbage found themselves on 64 for 2 from 5 overs. Unfortunately the first ball of the fifth over was a high full toss which the batsman top edged into the left eye of wicketkeeper James Paterson. For precautionary reasons James was stretchered from the hall and taken to Swindon hospital for examination. We are glad to report that James is OK. He has received a big black eye, a cut and some swelling for his troubles but thankfully should be back and fighting fit after a couple of weeks rest. Due to this delay and the hold up all remaining fixtures would have suffered. The match was abandoned to be re-played at a later date. Having won the preliminary match last week, the B team faced Burbage B in the first round of the cup. Batting first, Collingbourne lost two early wickets but runs for Ole Scott (38*), John Aitken (28*) and Jon Candler (27*) meant that Collingbourne were able to post a total of 128-3 from their ten overs. Burbage B then started aggressively in their innings, reaching 79-1 from five overs, with the only wicket being a run out. However, another run out signalled a collapse, with the final five wickets falling in the next ten deliveries for the loss of just six runs, with Miles Averill claiming three in one over and Charlie Knight sealing the victory with Burbage B all out for 85. They now face either Marlborough or Gt Bedwyn in the semi-final. 'B' Team Extend Unbeaten Run 'A' Team Move Up to 3rd 31st January: Third placed Collingbourne A played ninth placed Marden in their latest Savernake League indoor fixture. Collingbourne lost the toss and batted first quickly making use of Marden's wayward bowling by scoring 16 in the first over. Collingbourne's onslaught continued throughout the innings and with the assistance of 64 extras from Marden. Collingbourne amassed a score of 145 for the loss of only 1 wicket in therir10 overs. Graham Chandler scored 25 not out whilst Jonathan Cummings found his form again with an excellent 24. Bertie Rogers chipped in with a useful 12 not out and Captain Owen Sheppard managed to bat the entire innings for 22 not out. (And I'm considered a boring batsman. Ed) With the ball Collingbourne again managed to find a bit of form and a very aggressive 1st over from John Foster was followed by the golden arm of Graham Chandler picking up 2 wickets. Graham struck again later on in the game this time with a run out after Jon Cummings also claimed a wicket. John Candler supported the A team's tight bowling with a wicket for himself whilst Bertie Rogers excelled himself behind the stumps standing in for the injured James Paterson. In the end the score was too much for Marden and only opener Steve Drewitt put up any real resistance hitting some lovely shots and seeing the innings through for all 10 overs. Marden finished on 88 for 5. Coming off the back of two successive victories in the cup, the B team were looking to extend their unbeaten run against Burbage C. Bowling first with a swinging ball proved difficult, with frequent extras from all bowlers despite everyone's best efforts allowed Burbage C to score 130-4 from their 10 overs, with Charlie Knight taking a wicket, along with three run outs thanks to some good fielding from Collingbourne. Collingbourne's innings started well with opener Charlie Knight (25*) retiring in the second over. Burbage also found it difficult with a swinging ball, allowing Collingbourne to score quickly, and when Ole Scott retired (28*) with the score 76-1 from 5 overs Collingbourne became favourites to win. Quick runs for John Aitken (10) and Jon Candler (16) set the game up for Kris Walbridge and Archie Scott to score the required total with almost an over to go. Captain Edmonds
Other news: Congratulations are due to Karl Rogers and David Paterson who have passed the Level 1 Umpire's Course. Indoor nets are to start on 21st March, 10.30am-12.00pm at Wellington Academy (Castledown School), Ludgershall. Then continue for 28th march 11th & 18th of April. It will cost £3. Outdoor nets will commence at the ground on 29th April. Tours: Notices are coming round regarding the Devon Tour. Karl has negotiated a very favourable price for tourists on the Devon Tour, deposits need to be in by the end of February. There are still discussions going on regarding the overseas tour for 2011. There is to be a Kwik Kricket tournament for primary schools held on the Recreation Ground on Thursday 10th June.
'A' Team Knocked Out of Cup but 'B' Team Extend Unbeaten Run 7th February: Collingbourne 'A' played Burbage 'A' in the reply of the 2nd round cup game. Collingbourne batted first and lost three wickets in the first three overs. Thankfully John Foster and Archie Scott managed to steady the ship and support Opener Graham Chandler (who scored over 25) in setting a total of 82 before Collingbourne were all out in the final over. In response Collingbourne attacked Burbage with the ball and Graham managed to get a very good run out to help apply some pressure. Collingbourne bowled as tight as they could. But despite Owen Sheppard picking up a wicket caught by John Cummings and Bertie Rogers stopping anything wayward from behind the stumps, it was all to no avail. Burbage scored the winning runs in the 8th over to take them through to the semi-final of the cup. This week Collingbourne 'B' faced Great Bedwyn 'B'. Losing the
toss and fielding first, Collingbourne started slowly, allowing Bedwyn 'B' to
reach 42-0 from the opening three overs. However, only conceding s63 runs from
the final seven overs, with Jon Candler yielding just 10 runs from two overs in
this spell and some good fielding from everyone in the Collingbourne team, the
'B' team were able to restrict the opposition to 105-4, with three wickets
through run outs and 1 for Charlie Knight. Collingbourne's reply started badly,
losing opener Karl Gingell in the second over. This proved to be only a minor
setback, with Ole Scott (25*) and Charlie Knight(25*) retiring in consecutive
overs, leaving John Aitken and Kris Walbridge to take Collingbourne past the
victory target for the loss of just the single wicket. A Team in Chase for Title.'B' Team Lose to Marlborough 14th Feb: Aldbourne won the toss and chose to bat. A combination of good fielding and suicide running tactics saw Aldbourne lost 3 quick wickets to Run Outs. Only three bowlers were used, John Foster bowled with his usual fire and Miles Averill his usual consistency, evergreen Graham Chandler picked a wicket and an easy catch off the wall from John Fosters bowling to have Aldbourne floundering at 50 all out. It was great to see Jimmy Paterson keeping wicket (with his helmet on this time) again and although a little rusty coped well. When Collingbourne batted the normally consist Graham Chandler had an off day and was run out for six from a good direct throw. Jon Cummings and John Foster batted through scoring runs at will for an easy win and a high number of points. The 'A' Team are still in with a chance of winning the league but with games against Bedwyn 'A' and Marlborough it will be a tall order. Collingbourne 'B' took on league leaders Marlborough. Fielding first, the 'B' team bowled and fielded well throughout the ten overs, stopping Marlborough from collecting easy runs through extra's and easy singles. As a result, they were able to take three run out opportunities along with a wicket for Ole Scott to limit Marlborough to 115-4. With a reachable victory target of 116, the 'B' team's innings started badly, losing both opening batsmen within the first three overs. Two further wickets fell cheaply and despite the best efforts of John Aitken (21) and Archie Scott (10) following a brief hold up, Collingbourne were bowled out well short of the required target, finishing on 77-6. 'B' Team in Double Header Triumph 'A' Team Flounder 21st Feb: With Burbage 'A' and Marlborough both losing, Collingbourne 'A' were looking to make up ground with a win against Burbage 'B'. Having lost the toss Collingbourne made the worst possible start with the bat losing two wickets in the first over, both to run outs. From then on Collingbourne's remaining batsmen batted very tentatively. Graham Chandler made yet another 25 whilst Bertie Rogers managed to bat almost the entire innings. Collingbourne struggled to make runs and were all out with a ball to go for 71. Unfortunately Collingbourne didn't fair any better with the ball and a combination of too many extras and too few runs meant that Burbage reached their total within seven overs. With only five games remaining all against close rivals Collingbourne 'A' are going to have to pick their game up if they are to challenge for 2nd place, let alone the league. Due to an extra appearance
in the cup, the B team had an extra fixture this week. In the first game, they
took on Burbage A, who were placed third in the league. Winning the toss and
fielding first, Collingbourne started well with Jon Candler and Charlie Knight
bowling tightly. Collingbourne then took two wickets in two balls in the next,
with Ole Scott taking a reaction one handed catch of his own bowling before John Aitken managed to hold on to a low catch. This gave Collingbourne the momentum
for the rest of the innings, with Jon Candler finishing with 2-42 from three
overs and Ole Scott 2-9 from two to go with two run outs leaving Burbage 73-6
with two overs to go. Collingbourne's reply started badly, with Charlie Knight
throwing his wicket away in the first over. However, Ole Scott managed to hit 25
to get the chase back on track. Burbage managed to pick up a few wickets through
run outs, followed by the dismissal of Kris Walbridge who was caught after the
ball deflected off his shoulder. Despite the loss of these wickets,
Collingbourne were able to reach the required total with Ole Scott (28*) and Jon
Candler the undefeated batsmen. 'B' Team Get Home With two Balls to Spare 'A' Team Flounder Feb 28th: Collingbourne 'A' played a Burbage 'C' team who lost to 9th placed Marden the week before. Collingbourne who are on a recent bad run of form were desperate for a win. After losing the toss yet again Collingbourne were forced to bat first but made a better start of it than the week before posting 50 before losing Captain Owen Sheppard. Graham Chandler yet again made 25 but despite some exciting batting from Jon Cummings, Charlie Knight and Jon Candler Collingbourne were only able to post a total of 99 for 5 from their 10 overs. Things still weren't going Collingbourne's way in the field. The bowlers struggled to find their line and length whilst catching and run out opportunities were few and far between. Good bowling from Charlie Knight and John Candler combined with good catching from Graham Chandler and a run out by Jon Cummings did lift the team. But despite Collingbourne's best efforts, especially wicket keeper Bertie Rogers who kept things tidy his end, it was all to no avail as Burbage scored the winning runs in the 8th over for the loss of 2 wickets. Due to recent poor form by the A team and good form by the B team next week's game between the two will determine who goes into 4th and possibly 3rd spot with three games to play. For both teams a top three final position behind Marlborough and Great Bedwyn 'A' is still very much a possibility. Collingbourne B faced Burbage B. Winning the toss and fielding first, Collingbourne bowled well with a swinging ball with Jon Candler, Charlie Knight and Ole Scott causing trouble for the Burbage batsmen early on. With the introduction of John Aitken into the attack, Collingbourne were able to pick up a wicket through a run out. Charlie Knight then picked up wicket in the next over, with Kris Walbridge taking the catch. Two wickets then fell in the next John Aitken over but Burbage were able to score runs from the final over to post a total of 114-4. The Collingbourne reply started poorly, with Charlie Knight run out at the non-strikers end from the third ball of the innings. However, Karl Gingell and Ole Scott were able to steady the ship with both players retiring. John Aitken and Kris Walbridge helped the scoreboard tick over and John Candler scored quickly to help Collingbourne reach the required total with two balls left, Karl Gingell (31*), Ole Scott (26*) and John Candler (27*) were the unbeaten batsmen. Two Side of the Same Coin The 'A' & 'B' Teams clashed in the indoor league last Sunday. The reports of both captains are below.
Both Indoor Teams Lose to Top Opposition 14th March: Last Sunday Collingbourne 'A' played top of the league Marlborough. Collingbourne won the toss for once and elected to field first. Marlborough made light of the Collingbourne bowling and despite a great effort both with ball and in the field Marlborough managed to score 151 for 1 from their 10 overs. In response Collingbourne lost a wicket in the first over and another in the 3rd. But Captain Owen Sheppard (24), Keeper James Paterson (25) and Bertie Rogers (19*) managed to steer Collingbourne to a respectable 112 for 4 from 10 overs. Unfortunately right from the start they were struggling to get within Marlborough's total. Collingbourne B faced a Great Bedwyn A team challenging for top of the league. With third place a realistic possibility for the B team, this was an important game for both sides. The B team fielded first and played the first four overs with five fielders as one player was running late. Despite the best efforts in the field to restrict the runs, Great Bedwyn had no trouble scoring runs with one less fielder to find. Even when the B team were up to six players, Great Bedwyn's batsmen were able to score quickly and reached 121-0 from 9 overs. However, two wickets for Ole Scott and a run out in the last over provided some respectability to the score, with Great Bedwyn finishing 131-3. The Collingbourne reply started badly with opener Tim Nichols run out in the first over. Charlie Knight and Ole Scott batted well but Great Bedwyn bowled accurately and fielded well to restrict runs for the B team, and when Charlie Knight was run out for 16 the match appeared to be lost for Collingbourne. John Aitken had a rare failure with the bat, but Ole Scott did manage to retire for Collingbourne B. Kris Walbridge hit two sixes in a quickfire 13 and Jon Candler fell cheaply before Ole Scott was last man out for 26 from the penultimate ball with Collingbourne all out for 83. With one league game to go hopes are still high that the B team can finish third but will need results to go their way. 21st March: Collingbourne 'A' played two indoor games on Sunday 21st March 2009. The first was against the 2nd placed team in the league Great Bedwyn 'A'. After winning the toss Collingbourne elected to field first and allowed Bedwyn to amass a final total of 150 for 4. Three wickets for captain Owen Sheppard (1 caught and bowled, 1 caught by Tim Nichols and 1 caught by Neil Stevens) plus the run out of Rob Palmer for 30 were the highlights of the innings. Neil Stevens, Tim Nichols and William Atkinson all bowled effortlessly. But despite this and some good fielding from James Jackson and wicket keeper Gary Rowlands, Bedwyn proved to strong with the bat. Bedwyn were equally strong with the ball and in the field as Collingbourne struggled to make a respectable total. In the end they finished 85 for 4 with Captain Sheppard making over 25 not out ably supported by all 5 batsmen who all managed to deal some lusty blows. In their 2nd game Collingbourne 'A' faced 3rd placed team Burbage 'A'. Again Collingbourne won the toss and elected to field first. With Graham Chandler replacing Will Atkinson Collingbourne soon went about applying pressure to the Burbage batsmen. Neil Stevens, Graham Chandler and Owen Sheppard all bowled well and despite Burbage scoring 130 for 5, all 3 bowlers were able to pick up a wicket each with Graham Chandler claiming 2 excellent run outs. Unfortunately Collingbourne's response with the bat wasn't as good and they lost 2 of their top 3 batsmen to good run outs within the first 3 overs. Captain Sheppard also struggled making only 15, so it was left to Jackson, Stevens and Rowlands to see Collingbourne through. The three batsmen battled and managed to take the score to over 60 for the loss of 4 wickets by the end of play. To sum up Collingbourne 'A's indoor season you'd have to say it was one of such promise with 6 wins from 7 at the start of the season. But ended with disappointment as we finished 6th out of 10 teams with 9 wins and 9 defeats. However, as usual we have enjoyed the season and are now looking forward to taking it outdoors. I want to thank everyone who has played for Collingbourne A this year and hope we can better ourselves next winter. Finally, good luck to Collingbourne B in the cup. Hope you make it through. In their final league game of the season, the B team faced Marden. Collingbourne 'B' lost the toss and fielded first. After an expensive first over, Collingbourne's bowlers started to find their line and length with Owen Sheppard taking a wicket thanks to a reaction catch behind the stumps by Ole Scott. John Aitken and Jon Candler both bowled aggressively with no reward but the B team were able to take two run outs resulting in Marden finishing 99-3 from their ten overs. Collingbourne's reply started well with opener Jon Candler quickly batting his way to an aggressive 25*, who was well supported by Kris Walbridge (12). John Aitken and Karl Gingell carried on the aggression, and through a mixture of wides and good running took the score to 97-1 when Karl retired with the second 25 of the innings. John Aitken (17*) then hit the next ball for a six to wrap up a comfortable victory for Collingbourne B. With the league now finished, Collingbourne 'B' face Marlborough in the semi-finals of the cup, with the winners facing either Burbage 'A' or Burbage 'C' in the final.
'B' Team Lose Out in Cup Semi 28th March: In the semi-finals of the cup, Collingbourne B faced leaugue champions Marlborough. Losing the toss, Collingbourne fielded first. Despite the best efforts from the bowlers and fielders, Collingbourne struggled to to take wickets early on, resulting in Marlborough scoring at a high run rate. Ole Scott managed to take two run outs in an over to give some respectability to the scoreboard, with Marlborough finishing on 145-2 from their ten overs. The Collingbourne response started badly, losing Karl Gingell early. The wicket of Ole Scott followed shortly and despite Charlie Knight (28) and John Aitken (17) providing some resistance, Collingbourne never got close to Marlborough, finishing a disappointing 71 all out. For anyone interested, Marlborough went on to win the cup, beating Burbage C in the final. The final indoor league table can be found here. The averages have also been published. Well, it can now be revealed that the Village Hall Committee have been working hard behind the scenes to secure funding for a new building. This exciting building will not only house all the usual features of a village hall but also feature a squash court, a sauna bath and a licensed bar. To see an artist's impression click HERE. (This was the April Fool for 2010) Good News to Start the Season The Club has been successful in being given a grant of £4,320 from Sport England to go towards the refurbishment of the practice nets. Karl Rogers was naturally delighted with this news and the club should be grateful to him and his collaborators, namely Dave Paterson and Dave Cummings for the hard work in securing this grant. There is still a short fall of around £1,000 but the club is confident of finding that sum from other sources. First Match Blues 18th April: Under incredibly blue sky we began our season at Burbage on the all-weather strip. Charlie Knight bowled the first ball of the season, it was a wide. Ole Scott was hit for the first four. John Baxter took the first wicket and Archie Scott the second. In fact they were the only two wickets to fall as Burbage rattled up 291-2 with two of their batsmen making 100s and retiring. In reply Collingbourne held on to end 170+-9. Graham Chandler and Charlie both made 42, John Baxter 31, Archie Scott and James Jackson 15, Mark Turnage & Ole Scott also making double figures. Things can only get better. 1st XI Rained off 2nds Win at a Canter 1st May: The 1st XI were rained off with them poised in a very promising position having hit 180 and having Lacock at 30-2 after fifteen overs. The 2nds struggled all through their innings to reach 153. Father and son, Rob (12) and Jamie Stamp opened up and put on 26 for the first wicket. There was a little flurry of wickets and Collingbourne were reduced to 44-3. Bertie Rogers made good use of his new bat with a six and four in his score of 15. Kris Wallbridge added useful runs but it was Jamie Stamp who held the innings together batting for over thirty overs to record a hard fought 26. There was then a late flourish of runs from Richard Kimber (20) and Owen Dowswett (14*) to leave the 2nds on 153 all out. In reply Potterne 3rds got off to an awful start with a suicidal run out with the score on 3. Further disaster followed and they were reduced to 9-4 thanks to some splendid bowling from Jim Nicholson and Richard Kimber. Aided by some excellent fielding, particularly from Dave Gale and Archie Scott, who both took great catches, Nicholson and Kimber bowled unchanged throughout the innings to dismiss Potterne for just 53 in twenty overs and earn the 2nds 23 points. Jim Nicholson claiming 6-23 and Richard Kimber 3-26. 1st XI Lose at Burbage 2nds Win at Home Sunday game Off 8th May: 1st team travelled to local rivals Burbage for their 2nd Wiltshire League Division 2 game. Despite the threat of rain covers made the pitch easily playable and after winning the toss Collingbourne fielded first. Two early breakthroughs for opening bowlers Ollie Scott (2 for 58 from 12) and John Foster (1 for 48 from 12) set the tone as Collingbourne found some movement both in the air on from the pitch. Burbage batsman Paul Lavis (43) and Dan Wootton (40) steadied the innings and pushed Burbage to 102 from 24 overs. A change of bowlers did the trick for Collingbourne though as Ian Kiy (3 for 30 from 12) and John Aitken (3 for 30 from 7) picked up important wickets and kept the runs down reducing Burbage to 132 for 8 from 37 overs. Unfortunately it was Burbage who were to have the last laugh of the innings as the tail wagged with James Lavis (31) and Roger Barker (29*) helped add 73 runs in the last 8 overs ending the innings on 195 for 9. In response Collingbourne made a poor start losing batsmen 2, 3 and 4 cheaply. Opener Graham Chandler (45) offered much needed resistance and gradually guided Collingbourne to 69 from 25 overs with the support of Jonathan Cummings (14) and Ollie Scott (17). The introduction of Geoffrey Rogers (44) gave the innings some much needed acceleration as he and Chandler took the game to Burbage with some hard hitting and quick scoring. Despite this both batsmen fell in their 40s and although the tail of Tim Nichols and John Foster did wag they were left with to much to do. The innings finished with Collingbourne all out for 148 in the 41st over. Nick Cook emerged the pick of the Burbage bowlers with match best figures of 5 wickets for 20 runs from 10 overs. The 2nds made 153-6 against Biddestone IV. John Baxter 26, Kris Wallbridge 24* and Bertie Rogers 37 were the main run getters. Biddesteone were put under immediate pressure as great bowling from Richard Kimber reduced them to 36-5. There was then a stand of 70 between Henry Entwhistle and skipper Tom Sorsby before Richard Kimber returned to swing the game back Collingbourne's way by bowling Sorsby. Entwhistle went on to make 60 before he was well caught by Steve Knight off the bowling of Jim Nicholson. When he was out the rest of the Biddestone batsmen weren't quite up to it and they were eventually dismissed for 128. Richard Kimber finishing with 6-18. Jim Nicholson claimed 2-28, Jon Candler 1-31 and John Baxter 1-12. Wilcot have cancelled the Sunday game as they can't raise a team.
Wednesday Team First Win 26th May: Woodlands hosted the Wednesday XI in the Savernake league this week on a threateningly dark evening. Luckily the rain held off (just) and Collingbourne were able to record their first win of the season. Collingbourne lost the toss and were put in the field. Super spells from Charlie Knight (1-20) and Tommy Grant (3-15) kept Woodlands to 116-9 from their 15 Overs. There was good support with the ball from John Foster, Ollie Scott and Miles Averill. In general the fielding of the squad continues to impress with good catches behind the stumps from Karl Gingell and in the field by young Rhys and Iain Kiy. Tommy Grant and Ollie (Bam Bam) Scott were asked by skipper Geoff Rogers to open the batting. The youthful opening pair made light work of a difficult batting track and darkening conditions. Big sixes and some classy shots from both batsmen saw them see Collingbourne home for the loss of no wickets in under 12 Overs. Tommy G finished of 55* and Ollie 56*. No game next Wednesday due to club tour.
1st Lose by 7 Wickets. 2nd XI Lose Unbeaten Record 5th June: Collingbourne made a good start with openers Graham Chandler (25) and Ole Scott (27) sharing a partnership of 56 from 16 overs. The introduction of Small the Heytesbury & Sutton Veny spinner slowed the run rate down and accounted for both openers. After some initial sparring Collingbourne got going again and managed to turn a score of 67 for 2 from 20 overs into a good final innings total of 240 for 8 from 45 overs. Tom Pike was the top scorer for Collingbourne with 58 ably supported by Captain Owen Sheppard (38) and John Foster (36). Big end of innings hitting from Geoff Rogers (12) and Jonathan Cummings (10) also helped Collingbourne to their final total. For Heytesbury & Sutton Veny Captain Small was the pick of the bowlers with 4 wickets for 48 runs from his 12 overs. In response Heytesbury & Sutton Veny made a good start as the two opening batsmen took the score to 85 from 16 overs for no loss. The breakthrough came thanks to a superb bit of fielding by young Archie Scott who made the most of a mix up between the batsmen with a direct hit run out. Charlie knight then quickly accounted for batsmen 3 and 4 with an LBW and a catch by Vice Captain Chandler. Unfortunately Collingbourne could not remove opener Wagstaff who gave very few chances on his way to a well deserved hundred. Wagstaff found good support in Nash who between the two of them carried Heytesbury & Sutton Veny through to the finish with 3.1 overs remaining. This was despite Collingbourne throwing almost every bowler they had available at the pair with little success. Wagstaff finished unbeaten on 119* and Nash 74*. Charlie Knight was Collingbourne's best bowler with figures of 2 wickets for 40 runs from 8.5 overs. The 2nds lost their unbeaten record when they went down to Bradford Town 2nds by 4 wickets on Saturday at the Recreation Ground. Asked to bat first on a lively and unpredictable track. Jamie Stamp and John Baxter posted 60 for the first wicket before Stamp was out for 26. There was then a collapse as 5 wickets fell for just 25 runs. Debutant Tom Allat impressed with 26 in the lower order as they limped their way to 140. Bradford set off carefully in pursuit of their target. Jon Candler struck quickly removing opener Long for 3. But Tom Burrows dug in and set out his stall to play a long innings. At 82-5 the game was poised and another breakthrough may have swung things Collingbourne's way. Burrows had now been joined by his skipper Darren Jones who, crucially, was dropped very early in his innings. Together they moved to 128 before Jones was bowled by Baxter. Burrows remained unbeaten on 55 as the winning runs were hit from the 2nd ball of the final over. For Collingbourne Candler took 1-24, Baxter 2-23, Rogers 2-40 and Knight 1-39. League tables are now up to date. To see them click here.

Candler Nicholson Set New Record But Disastrous Day for 1st XI 12th June: The 1st XI were dismissed for just 36 against Bath. Charlie Knight was the top scorer with 12. In reply bath took just 7 overs to get to their target. It was an unbroken stand of 62 for the tenth wicket between Jon Candler and Jim Nicholson that saved the blushes of the 2nds at Westinghouse. These two came together when the score was 68-9 with 13 overs still to go. Whilst not a record for the whole club, which was set in a tour match against Yarcombe, this is, almost certainly, a league record. With a careful measure of watchful defence and attacking shots the two of them frustrated Westinghouse to carry their bats through to then end of the innings. Before that only John Baxter 17, and Steve Knight 23 had made double figures. Jon Candler was in action again with the ball removing Chris Grace with the score on 17. A stand of fifty between ended with Jamie Stamp catching Peter Grace. Westinghouse then wobbled as Steve Knight took two more wickets and at 60-4 the game was balanced. Unfortunately for Collingbourne the next breakthrough didn't come until it was almost too late. One more wicket was claimed with the scores level to help Collingbourne to another bowling point. Run fest at St Mary Bourne 13th June: As if in contrast to the day before the Sunday XI chased 255 to win at St Mary Bourne. Owen Sheppard and Ole Scott put on 101 to place Collingbourne well and truly in command. Sheppard falling just 3 runs short of a well-deserved ton, Ole Scott ended up undefeated on 53. Wednesday Achieve Notable Win The Wednesday mid-week team scored a great win over Bedwyn. To read the full report click here. League tables up to date to read them click here.
Plate Final Produces Dramatic Win There was a dramatic one run victory on Friday night for the mid week team over Pewsey in the Plate Final of the knock out competition. More details later. Wednesday Team in Another Close Finish 2nd July: The 1stXI lost by just 10 runs on Saturday. Asked to score 245 they were finally all out in the last over. Geoff Rogers led the charge with a brave 99. He was only out of the last ball of the game trying to hit eleven to win the game. To read a full account of the match click here. The 2nds were dismissed for just 90 and lost by seven wickets to Potterne III who went above them in the league. They are now third behind Potterne & Bradford Town. News of the President's match when it arrives. To read the report of the Wednesday team's match with Burbage click here. President's XI Sneak Home by Three 3rd July: President's batted first opening with Ben Nichols and Malcolm Chandler. Geoff Rogers got Ben out and Jon Candler bowled Malcolm. Owen Sheppard had Grant Langfield caught by Ole Scott. James Grant and Matt Nichols then shared a good partnership until James was out on 43. Matt Nichols was bowled Tom Pike for 73 and John Aitken was out to Ole Scott. Archie Scott also got a wicket. President's finished on 226 for 7 with Paul Isherwood and Tom Edmonds at the crease. Tom put some lusty blows in to finish. In reply Collingbourne started well with Ian Kiy (29) and Tom Pike (66) scoring 67 quickly. Geoff Rogers (26) carried on but Collingbourne slowed down as they lost wickets regularly. Ole Scott and Archie Scott (30*) tried to rescue it and almost did falling short of the 227 needed by 3 runs in the last over. Collingbourne ended 224 for 7 from their 40 overs. Burbage Too Strong. 2nd XI Back On Track 10th July: Burbage were too strong for a weakened 1st XI on Saturday. They scored over 200 and dismissed Collingbourne fairly cheaply. To read the full report of the game click here. The 2nds were put in to bat on a lively all weather strip at Biddestone. The quickly slumped to 71-7, with only Pete Reynolds making any real impact until he was cruelly done by the bounce of the pitch. However, Robin Ball (30*) and Craig Watts (34) came to the rescue with a stand of 61. The last two wickets fell cheaply and Collingbourne were left 142 all out. Biddestone seemed in a hurry to reach their target and raced to 30 off the first four overs. It was the introduction Steve Knight and John Baxter that slowed them down and they began to make inroads into the batting. The first wicket fell to a careless run out, well executed by Jon Candler, with the score on 51. From then on there was a steady procession as wickets fell regularly. The Biddestone skipper, Graham Horne in company with another experienced player John Crisford seemed intent on grinding out the necessary runs. The introduction of Archie Scott fresh from his leavers' prom night that had a devastating effect. He had Crisford well caught by Atkinson from his first ball and went on to claim 4-14 from just four overs. With Baxter recording 4-20 from 11 overs and Knight picking up 1-22 from 9 overs Biddestone were all out for 102. Steamer Hits Ton in Lost Cause
11th July: On a hard true wicket with a fast outfield with short boundaries this was always likely to be a high scoring game and so it proved. Bishop's Cannings made 290-8 declared from just 38 overs. In reply Owen Sheppard and John Baxter got away to a good start with 81 on the board in 16 overs. With 20 overs to go the run rate had crept up to 8 an over and with fielders around the boundary the momentum couldn't be maintained. Owen Sheppard went on to hit a ton, his second of the season, and there were good knocks from Jamie Stamp and Ian Kiy as the Sunday team ended up forty runs short. League tables are now up to date to read them click here. Good Win for 1st XI. Disappointing Result For 2nds 17th July: Johnny Cummings (54) was the top scorer for the 1st XI in their all out score of 174 against Corsham 3rds. Tom Pike then claimed 4-21 as Corsham were dismissed for 153 to give Collingbourne a much needed win. More detailed report can be read here. The 2nds failed to fire. Managing only to score 159-9 Warminster III passed the score for the loss of 5 wickets. Tom Edmonds made a welcome return to the club, his first game since accepting the role of President. He made 28 careful runs after Warminster had put Collingbourne into bat on a wicket which offered some early help for the bowlers. Pete Reynolds held the innings together with a score of 53 but Tim Nichols (13) and Adam Baxter (13) were the only other batsmen to make double figures. In reply Warminster got away to a flyer with the score on 58 before Geoff Rogers had Stokes LBW. The wicket had now dried out and batting was noticeably easier. John Baxter (8/8/35/1) and Tim Nichols (9/0/38/3) did stem the flow of runs somewhat but were unable to prevent Warminster passing the total in the 30th over. Steamer Goes to 2nd Consecutive Ton. Billy Brett Gets off the Mark 18th July: There was another ton for Owen Sheppard against Chute on Sunday. Opening the batting he made 113 and featured in an opening stand of 111 with John Baxter. There were good contributions from Ian Kiy, Tom Pike, Bert Rogers, Ole and Archie Scott. Then in the Chute innings fourteen year old Billy Brett claimed his first wickets in men's senior cricket and finished with 3-9 from just four overs of cleverly flighted off spin. Archie Scott and Ian Kiy picked up a couple of wickets each and there were two run outs as Chute were dismissed fairly cheaply. Wilts League tables are now up to date. To read them click here. Pike Magic Ton Scored in Vain ![]() Tom Pike scored a magnificent and memorable unbeaten 107 on Weds away against the Burbage Old’uns. Pike opened the batting and batted through the innings playing a wide range of excellent shots all round the park including some classical drives and some big aggressive bunts. This was Toms first century of his cricketing career we all hope it will be the first of many. Pike was given interesting support from his team mates with wickets falling regularly. Owen ‘Steamer’ Shepherd took a nasty blow to the head but like a true hero was able to return to the pitch after a few overs of recovery. Ole Scott scored a quick fire 25 and Ian Kiy chipped in with 15. Collingbourne closed on their best Wed’s night score of the season 171-6. The Collingbourne defence started poorly, Burbage had amassed 30 after the first two overs. The pattern of quick scoring continued and despite good bowling from Miles Averill and Iain Kiy Burbage were able to reach the total with six deliveries to spare. This was a very disappointing result having posted a score that really should have been defended. The next Wednesday night game is not until 04/08/10. Fingers crossed there will be more runs and more drama in store… this time with a victory to top it off.
Net Refurbishment
The double bay practice net is now completely refurbished and available for use. Typical of the weather gods to make it pour down on the first practice night they were available. Thanks are due to Karl Rogers' tireless efforts on our behalf to acquire the funding and to the awarding bodies: Sport England and the Tidworth Area Board.
23rd July: Owen Sheppard just can't stop scoring runs at the moment. He hit his 3rd ton of the season as the 1st XI rattled up 298-6. In reply Urchfont made 225 all out. To read the full match report click here. The 2nds were in a very exciting, but ultimately disappointing game! Cherhill batted first, and faced with a generous bowling attack managed 212 for only 1 wicket (and that was a run out attempting a third run!). In reply Collingbourne batted steadily with Tom Edmonds (55) and Jamie Stamp (68) contributing well and putting Collingbourne in a great position needing only 7 runs in the last 2 overs with 3 wickets in hand to win the match. Disaster!!! All 3 wickets fell for 0 runs and we finished 6 runs short with 206. League tables are now up to date. To read them click here. Blank Weekend August 1st: The Sunday team couldn't come to the rescue of the club's honour as they were well beaten by White Horse. Owen Sheppard continues his run of Sunday form with 82 and there were useful contributions from Archie & Ole Scott, Tim Nichols and, debutant, Luke Trebert. July 31st: Two severely depleted teams lost on Saturday. 1st XI lost by 71 runs at Beanacre. Batting first Beanacre made 236-8. In reply Collingbourne made 165 all out. To read a full report of the match click here. Despite a brave effort in the field the 2nds weren't able to stop Swindon making 217-4. Ole Scott claiming two wickets, Pete Reynolds one and a run out. It may seem churlish to state this but there can be only a few occasions when so many miss hit shots didn't quite go to hand. The Collingbourne reply seemed to be going well as John Baxter and Jamie Stamp added 41 in 11 overs before the introduction of the Swindon skipper, Roze, who bowled his left arm spin to great effect and Collingbourne were quickly reduced to 79-5. There was some encouragement from Steve Knight (19), Archie Scott (17) and a late flourish from Christian Grimley who smashed 24 in a last wicket stand with Darryl Jones who offered stoical resistance. Collingbourne being eventually all out for 141. Wiltshire League & Savernake League tables are now up to date to read them click here. 7th August: Geoff Rogers smashed the individual scoring record for the club with an incredible 184 not out in a total of over 324-6 against Heytesbury & SV. Mark Bateman, making a welcome return to the club for one week end managed a fifty. In reply Heytesbury managed 180 with Ian Kiy and Ole Scott getting three wickets each. To read a more detailed account click here. The 2nds lost to Bath Town IIs on Saturday. New boy Andy Clayden (1-21) started impressively and was unlucky not to have more reward for his efforts early on but it was Jim Nicholson (1-30) who made the initial breakthrough. Collingbourne then found wickets hard to come by until Robin Ball took a wonderful catch off the bowling of John Baxter (3-33). Ball then repeated the feat just two overs later and Collingbourne were back in the game. Steve Knight (3-29) claimed three late wickets and Andy Clayden returned for a richly deserved wicket and Bradford were 197-8 at the close of their innings. Collingbourne's reply could not have got off to a worse start with both openers removed in the first two overs before a run was scored. John Baxter and Pete Reynolds began a recovery of sorts which ended with Baxter being caught at the wicket for 16 with the score on 32. Wickets then tumbled and at 44-6 Collingbourne were effectively out of the game. Kris Walbridge (14), Robin Ball (28) and Andy Clayden (21) added runs to give some respectability to the score but Collingbourne were all out for 118. Whimple in Run Glut 8th August: The Sunday side were in another run glut against the visitors from Devon, Whimple. Batting first Collingbourne lost some early wickets and were 65-5 until Tom Pike and Archie Scott staged a revival. Pike eventually being out for 82. Ian Kiy weighed in with some hard hit shots and there was good support from Jon Candler. Finally the Collingbourne innings closed on 260. Whimple went after the runs right from the start but lost crucial wickets which slowed their reply until they had to settle for 199. After the game their was a great buffet laid on in the Blue Lion and Whimple made a presentation to the Collingbourne to mark the event. Let's hope this is the first of many such visits. 12th August: The Wiltshire Queries came to the Recreation ground and were involved in an exciting run chase led by the hugely talented Tom Shaw. Asked to score 223 to win Shaw totally dominated the innings making 141 before being bizarrely caught behind having hit the ball behind him on the backswing with the umpire already calling 'Wide' from the bowling of Steve Pike. Queries were all out for 201. For Collingbourne there had been good contributions from James Grant, Ian Kiy and Tom Pike. Earlier Tom Grant had been unluckily run out when the bowler dropped a sharp return catch but succeeded in deflecting it onto the stumps with Tom out of his ground. Sunday Win Over Wanderers
15th Aug. The Sunday side enjoyed an excellent afternoon in the company of the Wooblescroft Wanderers XI. Batting first Collingbourne made 221 in their 40 overs. John Baxter and Tom Grant got the innings away to a good start before Grant was caught at mid off. The were good contributions from Tom Basford, Tom Pike and Archie Scott who made his highest score of 45*. The Wanderers reply never really got going thanks to some tight bowling from Owen Sheppard and Ian Kiy. This initial good work was followed up by Jon Candler who bowled well without success and Billy Brett who picked up two wickets in one over. Tom Basford followed his batting performance with a good bowling spell, there was a wickets for John Baxter, Tom Grant and it was Charlie Knight who wrapped things up as the visitors were dismissed for 127. 1st XI Cancelled. 2nds Back to Winning Ways 21st Aug: The 1st XI were cancelled by Swindon on the morning of the game. However with results elsewhere going Collingbourne's way it seems that our league status is safe for next year. League tables now up to date. To see them click here. The 2nds completed a double over Blunsdon when they went to a 22 run win. With Steve Knight having to drop out at the last minute to work, Owen Sheppard came into the side as a result of the 1st XI game being called off. Blunsdon won the toss and asked Collingbourne to bat first. John Baxter and Charlie Knight got Collingbourne away to a solid start with 60 being added for the first wicket. Pete Reynolds made 20 before being dismissed LBW. Bert Rogers played two aggressive strokes in his brief stay at the wicket for 12, Kris Walbridge also made a round dozen and Archie Scott showed further evidence of his improvement with a quick ten. However, it was Owen Sheppard who demonstrated good temperament to bat through the innings and make 59 not out in a final total of 193-6. Blunsdon also began in solid fashion with 61 coming for the first wicket before Archie Scott had Phil Anderton caught at the wicket. John Baxter then removed Phil Jones for 10 and slowly the run rate began to climb. There was good tight bowling from Charlie Knight to continue the pressure on the Blunsdon batsmen. Then Jon Candler returned to pick up two wickets in his second spell to leave him with 2-35 from 12 overs. Archie Scott then finished off with 2-27 from 8 overs and John Baxter ended with 5-39 from 11 overs as Blunsdon were finally dismissed for 171.
22nd Aug: It was the turn of Bert Rogers to get in on the run scoring act on Sunday with 139 not out, scored in just 30 overs at All Cannings. The home team had no answer to the onslaught which was so unrelenting that David Paterson was able to declare with a total well in excess of 200. All Cannings were then very quickly dismissed. Quote of the day: Owen Dowsett MA, 'I always have a bit of trouble working out which direction is up and down.' 1st XI End With Convincing Win. 2nds Flounder at the Last 28th August: The 1st XI dismissed Melkshem Town for 90 and then knocked the runs off without losing a wicket to finally guarantee their position for next year. This has been a hard fought campaign amid difficult circumstances at times and this is just reward. To read a more detailed account of the game click here. The 2nds lost away to lowly Hinton Charterhouse, who were boosted by the inclusion of two 1st XI players unable to play away from home. Charlie Knight and John Baxter got away to a good start posting 53 for the first wicket in 15 overs before Baxter went LBW for 26. Pete Reynolds and Charlie then added 31 before Reynolds was out. Unfortunately Knight soon followed for 49. Bert Rogers and Jamie Stamp staged a revival both being dismissed for 20 in quick succession. The rest of the batting then simply folded and from a promising position Collingbourne ended all out for just 157. Hopes were high when Jim Nicholson bowled Hinton skipper Anil with score on 7. Steve Knight then took a stunning catch at backward square leg and Hinton were 20-2. That was the last success for the Collingbourne bowlers as Scott Creed and Harry Brooker shared an unbroken stand of 142 to take their side to victory. However, the 2nds will finish in fourth place in the league a very creditable effort all round and congratulations to all who contributed. 2nd XI averages for 2010 are now available and may be read here. 29th August: On Sunday, many of John’s friends and fellow players gathered together at Collingbourne Recreation ground to join Michelle and her family for an afternoon of cricket fun and competitions. The club were delighted to receive from Michelle, a magnificent bench dedicated to John, which is to be permanantly installed next to the scorebox. In an exciting and very close match, there were runs aplenty with Tom Edmonds and Ben Nichols top scoring for their respective teams. Post match fun continued afterwards in the Blue Lion where John’s cricket bat (signed by players and friends) was presented to Michelle.Funds raised from the match and various activities amounted to £525 which will be donated to Cancer Research and Countess of Brecknock Hospice. Enjoyable Win at Christian Malford & Sunday Side Creep Home Against Mildenhall 5th September: The Sunday side made a meal of beating Mildenhall. Set 99 to win Collingbourne were reduced to 36-6. There was a recovery between James Paterson and Archie Scott before Paterson was bowled. Then Tommy Allat showed he was in no mood to let this one slip and Collingbourne were able to get home with three wickets left. Earlier there were three wickets for Jon Candler and Billy Brett and four for Archie Scott. 4th Sept: The final Saturday game ended in a comfortable win. Collingbourne batted first and made 211-4 declared after 36 overs. Graham Chandler making 127 not out, Pete Reynolds 26, Tom Pike 36 and Steve Pike 18. In Reply Christian Malford got to 154-5 with opener Stephen Mason top scoring on 63 not out. Nine Collingbourne bowlers were used Archie Scott 2-21, Tom Pike 1-11 and John Baxter 2-24 were the wicket takers. High spot of the day had to be the incredible catch taken by Steve Pike to get rid of Collingbourne president and Malford chairman, Tom Edmonds. Click on the pictures above for the full size pic. Sixes Success at Burbage Collingbourne entered a team into the Burbage 6-a-side competition comprising of Jonathan Cummings, Bertie Rogers, Ian Kiy, Geoff Rogers, Owen Dowsett and Captain Owen Sheppard. The tournament consisted of 8 teams including 4 from Burbage, 1 from London, Wilton, the Moonraker's pub in Pewsey and Collingbourne CC. The games were 5 over games with 1 over per bowler on a normal size pitch. Wearing uniforms of this season’s navy blue tour shirts and shorts Collingbourne lost their first game to the Moonraker's scoring 57 for 4 chasing 58. Owen Dowsett picked up the only wicket that wasn’t a run out whilst Geoff and Bertie Rogers hit some big sixes. This put Collingbourne into the plate Semi Final and looking to have some fun and get the crowd going Collingbourne fielded in their banana costumes. The semi-final was against the Burbage Barbarians whom Collingbourne beat by scoring the required 47 in less than 3 overs for only the loss of 1 wicket. A caught and bowled for Kiy (1 of the few catches held in the tournament) and some inventive hitting from Jon Cummings meant Geoff Rogers could finish the game off in relative ease. In the final of the plate Collingbourne posted the highest score of the tournament of 63 against the Burbage students. Runs were mainly thanks to a retiring 25 from Jon Cummings but all 6 players batted and all added to the final total. Again fielding in their bananas Collingbourne managed to keep it tight thanks to some accurate bowling by Bert Rogers, another wicket for Kiy and a superb stumping and run out by Cummings meant the students were never going to reach Collingbourne's total. All 6 players enjoyed the day and helped make the tournament the spectacle that it was with their flamboyant batting, banana wearing, to the wicket dancing and wicket celebrations. Features of the tournament included boundary scoring music as well as specific tunes for the batsmen to walk out too and of course BBQ and Beer. Collingbourne emerged deserved plate champions, well done to the 6 who took part and to Burbage for hosting it. Comfortable Win Against Dinton
12th September: On Sunday Collingbourne
entertained Dinton in a late season friendly. Batting first Collingbourne
started quickly and aggressively with Tom Grant reaching his 50 with the
score on 64 from just 8 overs despite the loss of fellow opener Karl Gingell
cheaply. Grant was ably supported by Karl Rogers (31) before he was bowled
for 71. Ole Scott continued the run scoring with Tom Allat before he was
removed for 27. Allat however remained and brought up his maiden
Collingbourne fifty in quick time. Supported brilliantly by James Paterson
(34*) Allat continued to a score of 73* with Collingbourne finishing on
276-6.Dinton's reply started quickly despite good bowling from Christian
Grimley and Billy Brett. The introduction of Tom Grant slowed the run rate
down and the break through came with the score on 81, with Allat doing the
damage but this time with the ball. There was a further wicket for Allat and
one for Tom Grant as Collingbourne started to get through the Dinton batting
order. A clever piece of bowling by Ole Scott removed another Dinton batsman
through a well disguised slower ball whilst Archie Scott also picked up a
wicket at the other end. Despite the loss of wickets Dinton were still in
with a chance as their number 3 brought up a well deserved fifty. With every
Collingbourne player (aside from the two Patersons) having a bowl, Karl
Gingell was able to pick up a rare wicket before the wily Karl Rogers also
picked up the important wicket of the Dinton's number 3 for 89, deceiving
the batsman in the flight of the delivery with James Paterson making the
stumping. Billy Brett also took a couple of wickets in the final over (the
same batsman twice, aided second time round by a reaction catch by Ole
Scott) as Dinton failed to chase the required target.
Rogers Rolls back the Years
19th September: Karl Rogers rolled back the years
and featured in an unbroken stand 135 with Owen Sheppard to set
Collingbourne on the way to victory over Potterne that looked very unlikely
when they were struggling and 35-5. Part of the Collingbourne demise had
been due to a hat trick from seam bowler Page. Potterne too made a poor
start as Jon Candler tore into the Potterne top order and gave the hat trick
hero a taste of his own medicine when he too was dismissed first ball to a
good catch from Karl Rogers. There were three wickets for Tom Pike also as
the bowlers were aided by some superb fielding, non more than Owen Dowsett
who claimed two superb catches at short extra cover. Eventually Potterne
were dismissed for 102.
Dave Pat Signs off With a Win September 25th: The season ended with a good win over Aldbury in what will be David Paterson's final match as Sunday skipper (or so he says). Aldbury chose to bat first and were dismissed for 123. The wickets were all shared around by Jon Candler, Archie Scott, Tom Allat, Tom Pike, Billy Brett, John Baxter and Mark Brett. The Collingbourne reply was led by Tom Allat who was not out 52 at the end of the innings. There were useful contributions from Tom Pike, John Baxter and Pete Reynolds. During the tea interval there was a round of applause for Jane who also ended her time as tea lady for the club after fifteen years. Both Dave and Jane will be sorely missed. Fixtures for 2010 are now complete. Indoor fixtures will be published when they are available. Altogether in 2010 Collingbourne were involved in ninety matches, winning thirty eight, losing twenty eight and fourteen were cancelled or ended with no result.
