Collingbourne only managed one win on tour,
against Yarcomb on the final day but it was a very enjoyeable week for all that.
Thanks to everyone who took part and all those who spent time organising the
week.
Another Record Falls
21st May: Skipper Owen Sheppard and Mark Batemen were involved
in a massive stand of 195 against Beckington to set another new Club record for
the forth wicket. This was also Mark Bateman's third consecutive 'ton'.
Another High Scoring Day
at the Rec.

6th June: 1st XI vs Devizes 2nds hit an impressive 311. In reply
Devizes were more intent on survival than anything else and were restricted to
just 160 2nd XI vs Warminster 3rds came a real cropper. Bowled out for just 61
they suffered a big defeat. The Sunday side enjoyed a better day against
Ramsbury. In a game reduced to 25 overs Collingbourne made 158. Ramsbury really
went for it and at roughly the half way stage they were right in the game but a
couldn't maintain their momentum and were eventually all out for just over 100.
One Win - One Defeat 1st XI Go Top

In the two pictures above one shot ended up in
the hands of the bowler the other one went for four. Can you guess which is
which?
14th June: 1st XI won away at Buscot Park. The home side were
dismissed for 203. Skipper, Owen Sheppard claiming 7 wickets. (Earlier
postings suggested that Owen had got a hat trick. This was due to information on
the Wiltshire League website which was wrong) In reply
Collingbourne made the runs for the loss of just 3 wickets, Tom Grant making 64.
To read the full match report click here. This win puts
Collingbourne in top place in the division. Sadly things were not quite as rosy
for the 2nds who lost the corresponding fixture to Buscot Park. The visitors
made 160+ but Collingbourne were all out for a mere 61. Only Johnny Cummings
made any impression on the score with 40 odd. The Sunday side had a good day -
if a very long day - against St Mary Bourne. Collingbourne hit 263-6. 'Batty'
hitting 72*. More jug avoidance from 'The Veteran' (Tim Nichols) who ran himself
out on 46. St Mary Bourne were in the run chase right until the end but finished
twenty short. When the two teams retired to the 'barleycorn' there was then a
presentation from 'Dougie' and 'Batty' (see below) who gave a figure of the
Staffordshire Regiment Cap badge. Sadly the regiment are being moved to Germany
soon and we will lose the three players who have come to us from them. All will
be missed for their contribution both on and off the field.

Debutant, Vaughan Brown,
Starts With Hat Trick

21st June: 1st XI debutant Vaughan Brown made a dramatic start to
his Collingbourne career with 5-33 including a hat trick as Seagry were bowled
out for 112 in 39 overs. In reply the Collingbourne openers set about their task
with relish and 73 were posted in just 10 overs. Tom Grant just missed a fifty
being dismissed for 47. Stand-in skipper Graham Chandler made 33 and Geoff
Rogers 19 off just 20 balls. This comprehensive 8 wicket win keeps Collingbourne
well and truly on top of the Division. To read a full match report click
here. The 2nds lost to Cherhill. Collingbourne were dismissed for 93 and
the visitors didn't have too much trouble passing the total for the loss of
three wickets. A stand of 130
between John Baxter and Ollie Scott was the centre piece of the Sunday side's
score of 239-5 against Burbage. Ollie Scott went on to make a career best 85*.
Unfortunately it was all in vain as Burbage passed the score for the loss of
just two wickets. There was an entertaining game last Thursday when
Collingbourne entertained the Staffordshire Regiment in a twenty/20 match. The
Staffs were good winners on the night and a good time had been had by all.
Oh well - longest day today. Nights will start drawing in and it
will soon be Christmas.

Collingbourne scored 111 for 9 on a
slow crusty pitch and they got it in 13.5 overs for 1 wicket. Geoff Rogers

bowled out for 90+. In reply Blunsdon raced away but were pulled back by Tim
Nichols and Miles Averill and lost 5 wickets getting the last 30 runs. The
Sunday side had a good game against Bishops Canning who are made up of players
from Potterne and Devizes. Collingbourne made 185-9 in their 39 overs (one over
was lost to rain). There were runs for Charlie Knight, Mark Bateman and Owen
Sheppard. In reply John Baxter took 4 wickets, John Callender 1, Archie Scott 1,
Owen Sheppard 2 and Charlie Knight 2 as Bishops were bowled out for 142. To
complete a good win and make skipper David Paterson's day as he celebrated his
birthday.
Good Win for Wednesday
Side
22nd July: The Wednesday team beat
Burbage Old 'Uns by 53 runs. Collingbourne made 163 with Charlie Knight and Mark
Bateman each scoring 50. In reply Burbage were restricted to just 110-4
1st XI Off - 2nds Lose

The Sunday XI batting at Chute
19th July: The 1st XI were rained off
for the 2nd week in succession. The 2nds lost to Blunsdon who made 170 and
bowled Collingbourne out for just under 100. The Sunday XI were at Chute.
Collingbourne hit 156-5. Mark Bateman leading the way. In reply Chute had got
off to a solid start before the rain came and put a halt to the proceedings and
we all retired to the Cross Keys to watch Tom Watson cock things up in the play
off. Speaking of retirement, Club Chairman, David Paterson retires from teaching
this week after spending the last 22 years as Headteacher of Wallop Primary
School. The whole club wishes him a long and happy retirement.
'Batty' Sets New Record'

Mark Bateman has set a new aggregate
record for the number of runs scored in a season crashing through Ben Nichols'
previous highest of 1,238. There are still a handful of games available to Mark
to stretch his lead. He set the record during the win over Beckington which
established Collingbourne well and truly at the top of the division. For a full
match report click

There was no play for any of the teams
on Saturday 1st August. On Sunday the Sunday XI had a good win against White
Horse. White Horse were bowled out for 130. John Baxter claiming five wickets.
In reply Karl Gingell, Mark Bateman and Pete steadied the ship after two
early losses and Collingbourne ran out easy winners.
President's Match Provides
Great Entertainment

9th August: The annual President's
Match provided great entertainment. The President's XI running our eventual
winners. Graham Chandler made 69 for the Pres. XI's all out score of 164 and Tom
Grant 60 for Collingbourne in their 137 all out. Once again the BBQ equipment
came out to provide refreshment for everyone. Thanks to all who helped organise
a great social day's cricket. Jimmy Paterson then took charge of the camera to
provide the action and inaction shots. Click on the thumbnail for the full size

1st XI March On. BBQ Great
Success

8th August: The 1st XI marched on
with a ten wicket win over Devizes. Asked to score 120 Graham Chandler and Tom
Grant had no trouble knocking the runs off. To read a full match report click

Needing to score 190 they managed 120. The 'Grease' BBQ and Disco was a great
success. Thanks are due to all who organised the event and to those who troubled
to turn up in period costume. Tom Pike and Mary Cummings were the winners of the
fancy dress competition.

Collingbourne Close in on
Promotion
Collingbourne are closing in on
promotion after another easy win against Buscot Park 1st XI. With only two games
left the gap to second placed Beehive Bradford has now grown to 22 points.
Without several key players at the weekend, including Skipper Owen Sheppard the
batting order had to change to fill the gaps left by the missing regulars,
although the bowling was still at full strength. Therefore it was an easy
decision for stand in skipper Graham Chandler after winning the toss to bowl
first. Buscot’s batting order was also changed to try new blood, but the
experienced John Morton was dismissed in just the fifth over by an inswinging
yorker from the young opening bowler Charlie Knight. Despite a mini recovery,
wickets continued to fall regularly without an increase in tempo from the Buscot
batsmen leaving them on just 76 for 4 after 25 overs. The next 9 overs could
have changed the match with 50 runs coming from the aggressive batting of
Australian import Nick Babcock and his partner Gary Thompson, but both wickets
fell to the guile of Mark Bateman , aided by a very good catch in the deep by
Ollie Scott. The final 10 overs only increased the score by 30 runs. Buscot
therefore finishing on 161 for 7 off the full 45 overs. The successful opening
pair of Graham Chandler and Tom Grant started at their usual brisk pace and
despite an early scare for Tom Grant when he pulled straight to a fielder (which
was dropped) 50 was already on the scoreboard after just 10 overs and 98 runs
after only 18 overs. Tom Grant had just passed his 50 when caught in the gully
for 53, Graham Chandler soon followed on 43 but with this solid base the
following batsman all batted with confidence. Despite losing the prolific
Bateman, it was left to two of the younger players promoted up the order to
finish the job in just the 28th over. Iain Kiy and Charlie Knight both finished
the game in the 20’s ,with both players putting away the bad ball very
efficiently. Yet another good win by 7 wickets brought important bonus points as
Collingbourne try to stay ahead of the opposition and win the Divisional Title.
Collingbourne are Crowned Champions of Division 3
On Saturday 22nd
August 2009 Collingbourne travelled to Seagry looking to win their penultimate
game to guarantee promotion from Wiltshire League Division 3. After losing the
toss Seagry Captain Will Tidmarsh chose to bat first. A decision that seemed
incorrect as Collingbourne started well reducing Seagry to 65 for 4 wickets from
21 overs due to some accurate and aggressive swing bowling form their four young
bowlers of Charlie Knight (1 for 21 from 8) Ian Kiy (1 for 70 from 12) Tom Grant
and Ollie Scott. After surviving two dropped catches no. 5 bat M.Purton and no. 6
N.Jones worked hard to try and give Seagry a total to bowl at.
The partnership between the two amassed to 156 with Collingbourne trying
everything to both take a wicket and slow the runs. Success finally came with
the return of Ollie Scott. He bowled Purton for an incredible 111 which included
7 sixes. Ollie then accounted for 2 more wickets before the Seagry no. 9 Burton was run
out on the last ball by Jan Treroux in a freakish incident involving the umpire.
Jones remained unbeaten on 68 and Seagry ended the innings on 243 for 8 from
their 45 overs. Ollie Scott ending as the pick of the Collingbourne bowlers
taking his first 5 wicket haul of the season with match best figures of 5 for 47
from 10 overs. In reply Collingbourne started aggressively and despite losing 2
early wickets found themselves on 116 for 2 from 20 overs. Opener Graham
Chandler and Captain Owen Sheppard shared an 81 run partnership before Chandler
was trapped LBW to Lancaster. No. 5 came and went but Sheppard found much needed
support and aggression in Geoff Rogers. Both Batsmen played cautiously against
Lancaster and off spinner Lewis but managed to keep the runs going. The Sheppard/Rogers partnership finally fell with Sheppard being bowled by Lewis for 82 with
the score on 191. The pair had put on 65 but Collingbourne were left needing 53
runs from 10 overs with only 5 wickets in hand. When Rogers finally fell for an
impressive 50 in the 38th over with the score on 214 the game was
still very open. But it was no.7 Jon Cummings who had the last laugh. Ably
supported by the tail Cummings managed to hold his nerve to guide Collingbourne
to victory with only 2 balls to spare scoring a timely 28 not out at the same
time. The Seagry bowlers of Symonds (2 for 39 from 9.4) Lancaster (2 for 45 from
12) and especially Lewis (4 for 36 from 12) bowled tirelessly and continually
gave Collingbourne problems. But in the end it was to no avail. Elsewhere in
the league Collingbourne's main rivals for the title Beehive Bradford lost to
Chippenham 3rds. This means that Collingbourne go into the last game of the
season having already won the league. Well done to all involved and lets hope
for a successful season in Division 2 next year.
Awful Weather Fails to
Dampen Captain's XI

August 30th: The annual
captain's XI match was played in continuous drizzle which got increasingly heavy
as the day went on. However, it failed to dampen the spirits of anyone playing
and there were some good performances from Ben & Mat Nichols, Tom Pike and Ian
Kiy. As a result of the collection of match fees and the raffle for some highly
desirable prizes, which included a mug and plate set that would have graced any
antique shop, £200+ was raised for Macmillan Nurses.

End of Term Atmosphere to Final Match

August 29th: There was a definite sense of anti
climax to the final match on Saturday as Collingbourne, already Champions, lost.
A full report is available

won their last two games but will still be relegated. (In the end the 2nds
weren't relegated due to the re-organisation of the League and retained their
status. Ed)

Good Spirit to Final
Saturday Game & Exciting Sunday Win

5th September: There was a good spirit to the final Saturday
game of the season against Christian Malford. Proceedings began with the
Christian Malford players joining Collingbourne in a minute's silence in memory
of John Reece. Collingbourne batted first and made 242-8. There were runs for
Ollie Scott, Tom Grant and Charlie Knight. The visitors were never really in the
hunt for the runs and ended up with just over 100. The Sunday team had an
exciting win by just two runs over Mildenhall the next day.

Sunday Team End With a Win

The Sunday side signed off with a win at home against Dinton,
thanks largely to an unbeaten 80 from Geoff Rogers. Together with James
Patterson he shared in stand of 57 which swung the game Collingbourne's way
after some early losses. Owen Sheppard marked his birthday with a third ball
duck.

Ground Put to Bed for the
Winter

On a day more suited to cricket than some we have
experienced this year the working party assembled to put the ground to bed for
the winter. The net area was stripped of its old matting prior to the building
of a wall that will go around the perimeter of the practice nets. The square was
scarified, grass seed and top dressing added. The sight screens were put away
for another year.
Golf Day
Three teams competed, Collingbourne, Burbage & Easton Royal and
Bedwyn. Which totalled over 30 players altogether. At the end of which
Collingbourne won the team trophy with 258 points. I think Burbage came 2nd with
242 points. Ben Doherty hit the best round for Collingbourne of 36 but will not
claim the trophy as he was not a member of the club this season. Instead the
trophy will go to Karl Rogers who also scored 36. (Ben had a better score due to
him having a better back 9). Steve Knight was the only other Collingbourne
player to finish in the top 6. Well done to Karl, Roy and Paul Swatton for
organising the day and to Upavon for having us.
AGM Report 21st October
There
was a strong turnout for the Annual general Meeting held at the Village Hall on
21st October. Chairman, David Patterson, began the evening by reflecting on the
sad death of John Reece and there was a moment's silence in his memory. The new
committee are to consider a way of marking John's passing and discussions have
begun with his family as to the most appropriate way. It was announced that Roy
Chandler would be standing down as Club President for 2010. The meeting was
reminded that Roy had been involved extensively with Collingbourne Cricket since
the revival of the club in 1983 and was one of the few members who could even
recall playing on the Recreation Ground in the 1950s. Roy was thanked for his
great service to the club and the search will now begin for a successor. David
then congratulated the 1st XI on their success in winning Div.3 of the Wiltshire
League.
Karl Rogers began the secretary's report by congratulating
Charlie Knight on his achievement of hitting 163 against Woolcote and setting a
new individual highest score record for the club beating karl's own record which
had also been set against Woolcote. It was announced that there will be two
teams in the indoor league representing Collingbourne, prospective players have
been invited to a practice match at Castledown on Saturday 25th. Graham Chandler
is to organise the purchase of new cricket sweaters and playing shirts for 2010.
There had been several successfull and enjoyable social events during the year.
The President's Match, whilst resulting in defeat for the club had been a
splendid occasion. The Captain's match had raised £250 for Macmillan Nurses and
the 'Grease' themed night had raised £679. We had been congratulated on the
organisation of the Kwik Kricket tournament by the Wiltshire Cricket Board.
Sadly the barleycorn has closed however, we have approached and been welcomed by
The Blue Lion for next year.
Dave Cummings presented the accounts for the year and was
thanked from the chair on behalf of all the club.
The captains ' reports were very different. Naturally Owen
Sheppard's report was full of praise for the way the 1st XI had swept to the
championship. Honourable mentions were given to Mark Bateman, who not only set a
new record for the number of runs scored for the club in a season but also made
a complete clean sweep of the averages for each team he played for and hit 50
sixes, Darren Pritchard, Graham Chandler, Tom and James Grant. Bertie Rogers
report praised the spirit of the 2nd XI. However, he felt that the inconsistent
batting had been the cause of their eventual downfall. The season had ended on a
high point with two wins but this hadn't been enough to keep them up. The
midweek team had won as many as they had lost and the games had all been played
in a good spirit. David Patterson for the Sunday XI reported that they had
managed to win more games than they lost and he too added his appreciation of
Charlie Knight's record breaking knock. All the captains warmly thanked Jean for
acting as scorer during the year, all the various individuals who had acted as
umpires and Jane for the splendid teas she provided which were, once again, the
envy of many other clubs.
There were no changes to the Club rules and the annual
subscription will be frozen at its 2009 rate (£30 for adults before May 31st)
for another year. The new committee will consider if any changes are needed for
match fees. Averages were available, to read them click
here.

Indoor
League
Good wins for A and B teams at
the Marlborough leisure Centre in the Indoor League against strong
opposition in the form of Bedwyn and Marlborough respectively. B-team
won by 1 run against Bedwyn B with Bedwyn needing a six to win from the
last ball. Clever bowling from Ollie Scott and Tim Nichols helped win
the game.
A-Team reduced Marlborough to 100 for 5 from 10 overs with 3 run outs
and a wicket each for Bertie Rogers and Owen Sheppard. Owen and Graham
Chandler then hit 25 each. James Paterson also made a high contribution
with the bat as Collingbourne got the runs with 1.3 overs remaining for
the loss of 1 wicket. Marlborough won the
Indoor
League Collingbourne Remain Unbeaten
The 'B'-team took on Burbage
'C'. Collingbourne 'B' batted first scoring 124 for 3 wickets with Tim
Nichols and James Hutchinson top scoring. In reply Burbage C were on 124
for 3 with 2 balls remaining and failed to score the extra run meaning
the game was tied. Charlie Knight was the pick of the 4 bowlers claiming
the only wicket. The other 2 wickets to fall were run outs.
Collingbourne 'A' played Marden and scored 138 for 4. Graham Chandler
and Jon Cummings both scoring over 25. John Aitken 20 not out and Owen
Sheppard 19. In reply Marden scored about 120 for 3 wickets with Graham
taking 1 of them.
Indoor League Drama
The 'B' team tied with Burbage.
However ad Burbage had lost fewer wickets Collingbourne lost the game. The 'A'
team played Burbage A and got them all out for 87 with Owen Sheppard picking up
two wickets and John Cummings getting one. In reply Collingbourne A were 65 for
1 from 5 overs with Graham Chandler scoring over 25. However it took
Collingbourne up to the 2nd to last ball before they scored the winning run.
Sore Heads Take Their Toll
With a few sore heads Collingbourne B took on
last years league winners Marlborough.
Marlborough scored 102 for 4 with Charlie Knight taking 2 wickets. In
reply Collingbourne needed 6 to win from the last ball after Tim Nichols
31 and Captain Ollie Scotts 29 put them in a winning position.
Unfortunately Marlborough stopped any runs at the end an Collingbourne
were all out for 97.
Collingbourne A batted first against Aldbourne and thanks to some good
batting from Graham Chandler and Bertie Rogers who both made over 25,
coupled with a bit of luck, Collingbourne scored 121 for 4. Aldbourne
put up a spirited chase but were found wanting in the end as Graham
Chandler took 3 wickets. Assisted by some tight bowling from Miles Avril
and some excellent wicket keeping from James Paterson Aldbourne were all
out for 92 from 8.4 overs.
Presentation Night
The annual Presentation Dinner
dance took place on 22nd November and a great time was had by all. Karl
Rogers acted as MC for the evening and began by talking about a few of

'A' Team Go to First
Defeat. Good Win For 'B' Team
The A team unfortunately lost their
first game to last year's runners up Great Bedwyn A. Collingbourne bowled Bedwyn
out for 121, with new man, Neil Stevens taking 3 wickets for 14 runs from his 3
overs. In reply Graham Chandler scored another 25 but Collingbourne 'A' fell 19
runs short of the total finishing 102 for 4. The 'B' team beat Marden quite
comfortably. Jon Candler and Ollie Scott were top scorers in their total of 133.
In reply Marden were 110 all out. In the cup the 'A' team have been drawn
against the winnders of Burbage 'A' and Alderbourne. Whilst the 'B' team are to
play Marden in a preliminary round. The winners to play Burbage 'B'.
Two More Wins and 'A' Team
Go Joint Top
6th December: On Sunday Collingbourne 'A' played great Bedwyn
'B'. Collingbourne fielded first and reduced Bedwyn to 91 for 3 from their 10
overs mainly due to some good all round fielding and tight bowling from Neil
Stevens, Miles Avril and Graham Chandler who were all unlucky not to pick up
more wickets. In reply Collingbourne batted at a steady pace and scored the
required 92 in 9 overs and for the loss of 1 wicket. Graham Chandler scoring 25
and Owen Sheppard 22. After last week's matches Collingbourne 'A' were placed at
the top of the table joint with Marlborough on 93 points and Great Bedwyn 'A' in
3rd with 85. All of whom have won 5 lost 1 game.
Having won the toss Collingbourne B took on league new boys
Aldbourne. Having elected to bowl first, Collingbourne restricted Aldbourne to
99-4 from 10 overs with John Aitken and Tim Nichols taking a wicket each and
Archie Scott earning an important run out with a direct hit. In reply,
Collingbourne started well with Tim Nichols scoring 25, ably supported by Karl
Gingell who made 17 in a solid opening partnership. It was then left up to Bert
Rogers and Ollie Scott to see Collingbourne home with almost two overs to spare
reaching the 100 target for only the loss of one wicket.
